Family Stories for Peace UCC | The Day War Came

This month our theme is COMMUNITY!  Thank you to everyone who helped participate in Homecoming Sunday and make it a great return to the church community for the Fall season.

This week, we're looking at Jeremiah 32 and how the Israelites were taken captive to Babylon.  It was a super tough time for the Israelites!  We're reading "The Day War Came" by Nicola Davies.  This book, published in association with Help Refugees, tells the story of a young girl who must leave her home because of war.  This book may be especially useful at this time, when wars, refugees, and immigration are constant refrains in the news.

These stories help remind us that God is with us wherever we are and however difficult things get.  We can also remember that God wants us to welcome folks into the community, like the little girl in the story.  There is always enough room at God's table!

This is a story for Children and Families at Peace UCC. This lesson is for the Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost (Proper 20). We are talking about Jeremiah 32. This week we're reading "The Day War Came" by Nicola Davies. This book will be available during worship on Family Worship Sunday and at Kids' Night Out! Family Stories for Peace UCC | What If Everybody Did That?

Our theme this month is COMMUNITY.   Part of being in community is acting with respect and in ways that are mindful of the whole.  In our scripture story this week, Simeon makes friends and conducts his business by being dishonest!  What a bummer.  That's not a good way to treat the community!

This week we explore a little basic lesson in Kantian ethics with "What if Everybody Did That?" by Ellen Javernick.  In this story, a kid makes some decisions that he thinks don't matter much, but he's asked by people in his life, "What if everybody did that?" and he imagines the consequences.  What if everybody littered?  What if everybody fed wild animals?  What if everybody hugged people they loved?  We can all use this simple question to ask ourselves whether we are acting for the good of the community or acting in a way that might not be good for others.

This is a story for Children and Families at Peace UCC. This lesson is for the Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost (Proper 20). We are talking about Luke 16:1-13. This week we're reading "What If Everybody Did That?" by Ellen Javernick. This book will be available during worship on Family Worship Sunday and at Kids' Night Out! Family Stories for Peace UCC | Who Counts?

This month we're talking about COMMUNITY.  In September, we celebrate coming back together after Summer vacations with Homecoming Sunday!  It's a fun day to remember who we are as a church and to get started on all of the fun activities of Fall!

This week we're exploring Luke 15 through a book by Amy-Jill Levine and Sandy Eisenberg Sasso called "Who Counts?"  Levine and Sasso are Christian and Jewish children's books authors.  They explore stories of faith and community through a unique lens, often reimagining the stories and expanding upon them.  This book explores how each of us is important, even if we think or feel like we aren't.  God notices when we are missing or sad!

This is a story for Children and Families at Peace UCC. This lesson is for the Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost (Proper 19). We are talking about Luke 15. This week we're reading "Who Counts?" by Amy-Jill Levine and Sandy Eisenberg Sasso. This book will be available during worship on Family Worship Sunday and at Kids' Night Out! Our theme for the month of September is COMMUNITY!  In September, we traditionally celebrate Homecoming, or the start of the "church year" in September with a fun day of activities and food after church.

This week, we're talking about Paul's letter to Philemon and reading a book published by Amnesty International called "Dreams of Freedom."  This book, assembled with quotations from famous champions of human rights and illustrations by many different artists, explores the rights to freedom that all of us have and deserve.

This is a story for Children and Families at Peace UCC. This lesson is for the Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost (Proper 18). We are talking about Paul's letter to Philemon. This week we're reading "Dreams of Freedom" by Amnesty International. This book will be available during worship on Family Worship Sunday and at Kids' Night Out! Family Stories for Peace UCC | "I'm the Best!"

This week our scripture story from the Gospel of Luke explores humility.  Jesus tries to tell his followers that while society may place us into forms of hierarchy, God sees us all as equally important and loved, no matter how much money we may have or how important society may think we are.

We're reading a picture book called "I'm the Best!" by Lucy Cousins.  In this story, Dog thinks he is better than his friends because he is better at certain things, but we learn that Dog and his friends ALL have great skills and are each better at different things.  It's good to feel good about ourselves, but we're all important to God and the world!  In God's eyes, we're ALL the best :)

This is a story for Children and Families at Peace UCC. This lesson is for the Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost (Proper 17). We are talking about the Luke 13:10-17. This week we're reading "I'm the Best!" by Lucy Cousins. This book will be available during worship on Family Worship Sunday and at Kids' Night Out! Family Stories for Peace UCC | "Be Kind"

This month, we've been talking about JOY. One of the best ways to spread joy in the world is by being kind and helpful, even when it's not easy.

In our Bible story this week, Jesus heals a woman on the Sabbath. The religious leaders at the time got mad at him for helping the woman! We know that no matter what day of the week it is, it always pleases God to do the work of helping and healing, because kindness and doing what's right are more important than whatever rules say we shouldn't!

We further explore this with "Be Kind," a picture book by Pat Zietlow Miller. After Tanisha spills her juice at school, many kids make fun of her and she feels very sad. A little girl thinks about what it is to be kind to her friend and to others and how she can make Tanisha feel better. It's a great story about small acts of kindness and how they weave into the larger world.

This is a story for Children and Families at Peace UCC. This month, our theme is: JOY. This lesson is for the Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost (Proper 16). We are talking about the Luke 13:10-17. This week we're reading "Be Kind" by Pat Zietlow Miller. This book will be available during worship on Family Worship Sunday and at Kids' Night Out!
