Family Stories for Peace UCC | What If Everybody Did That?

Our theme this month is COMMUNITY.   Part of being in community is acting with respect and in ways that are mindful of the whole.  In our scripture story this week, Simeon makes friends and conducts his business by being dishonest!  What a bummer.  That's not a good way to treat the community!

This week we explore a little basic lesson in Kantian ethics with "What if Everybody Did That?" by Ellen Javernick.  In this story, a kid makes some decisions that he thinks don't matter much, but he's asked by people in his life, "What if everybody did that?" and he imagines the consequences.  What if everybody littered?  What if everybody fed wild animals?  What if everybody hugged people they loved?  We can all use this simple question to ask ourselves whether we are acting for the good of the community or acting in a way that might not be good for others.

This is a story for Children and Families at Peace UCC. This lesson is for the Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost (Proper 20). We are talking about Luke 16:1-13. This week we're reading "What If Everybody Did That?" by Ellen Javernick. This book will be available during worship on Family Worship Sunday and at Kids' Night Out!
